Sardine and broccoli rabe might not be your everyday combo, but once you try it, you’ll wonder why it took so long. This is a dish that brings together the bold flavors of the Mediterranean in a way that’s both rustic and refined. It’s healthy, satisfying, and packed with nutrients, perfect for when you want something quick, vibrant, and a little different.
Sardines are often overlooked, but they’re a powerhouse ingredient. Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and calcium, they offer rich, briny flavor that holds up beautifully next to bitter greens like broccoli rabe. Whether you use canned sardines in olive oil or fresh ones from the market, they bring a satisfying depth to the dish.
Broccoli rabe, also known as rapini, adds an earthy, slightly bitter note that balances the richness of the sardines. It’s typically blanched or sautéed with garlic, olive oil, and a pinch of chili flakes. That little bit of heat lifts the whole dish, while the garlic ties everything together.
The beauty of this pairing is its simplicity. A quick sauté is often all you need, start with olive oil, add sliced garlic and chili flakes, then toss in the broccoli rabe. Once it’s tender and a little crispy at the edges, stir in the sardines just long enough to warm them through. Serve it over toasted bread, mix it into pasta, or enjoy it on its own with a squeeze of lemon for brightness.
This dish is incredibly versatile. Serve it over a bed of couscous or farro for a hearty meal, or pile it on toasted sourdough with a squeeze of lemon for a rustic open-faced sandwich. Add a poached egg or a few roasted cherry tomatoes if you’re feeling creative.
It’s fast, healthy, and satisfying, and it uses ingredients you probably already have on hand. Best of all, it proves that a simple combination of high-quality ingredients can go a long way.
This dish is bold, flavorful, and totally satisfying without feeling heavy. It’s also budget-friendly and comes together in under 30 minutes, making it a great option for weeknight dinners or a quick lunch that doesn’t skimp on taste or nutrition.

This is a great recipe! The garlic and red pepper flakes add a kick, and the parmesan just takes it over the top! Yum!
I never thought of combining sardines with broccoli rabe, but this was surprisingly delicious!
I agree! Sardines are super underrated. Who knew they go so well with broccoli rabe? Yum!
Honestly, I wasn’t a fan. The sardines tasted too fishy for my liking. Maybe I overcooked them?
Easy to make, but I’m not sure I trust sardines. My grandma used to say they were full of worms… is that right?
Broccoli Rabe is so bitter! This recipe didn’t help 😩 but I guess that’s just how it is.
Yum! I put some lemon juice and it made a big difference! Highly recommend! 🙂
I never thought of adding lemon! Sounds like a great idea! 🙂
Took me a while to find broccoli rabe, what even is that? But the dish was kinda tasty.
Broccoli rabe is just a fancy name for a type of broccoli, don’t worry! Glad you liked the dish! 🥦
Tasty? I dunno, sardines are kinda stinky. But I guess if you like it, that’s what matters. 😕
I dont know what broccoli rabe is, but I used regular broccoli and it was still good! Kinda weird tho.
Sardines? Really? I dunno about that. Are they even healthy? Sounds gross.
Waaay too salty, my kids didn’t like it at all. Never making again.
I don’t think it’s too salty! You might have just added too much salt or used a salty sardine brand. It’s all about balance, right? 🤷♂️
Easy to make and quick dinner! Family loved it! Adding more garlic next time because why not!
I tried this with anchovies instead of sardines since I didn’t have any. Not the same, but it worked.
This dish is AMAZING! The flavors are just perfect together. I will make it again for sure!
Recipe is fine but why do people put cheese on everything? It should be banned.
Easy and quick to cook! I added a bit more garlic and some lemon juice. So good! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sardines? Really? Are we eating like cavemen? Just get some tuna, way better!
I dunno, sardines kinda freak me out. How can you eat fish that comes out of a can? 😅
Made it last night! My fam loved it except my picky eater kid. He only eats chicken nuggets. 😂
You might wanna add more spices. It was a bit bland for my taste. I would give it a 3 star, maybe boost flavor with lemon??
This looks delicious! I love sardines and broccoli rabe. Can’t wait to try!
