Greek Yogurt

August 30, 2023

Greek yogurt is a versatile and delicious ingredient that can be enjoyed on its own or used in a variety of recipes. It is a great source of protein and calcium, and its creamy texture makes it a satisfying snack or a base for sauces and dips. Making Greek yogurt at home is surprisingly easy and allows you to control the thickness and tanginess to your liking. Try this recipe for homemade Greek yogurt and enjoy its creamy and tangy goodness!

Its appeal goes beyond nutrition. Greek yogurt is incredibly adaptable. At breakfast, it can be layered with granola and berries, swirled with honey and nuts, or blended into smoothies for a protein-rich start. It also doubles as a fantastic base for sauces and dips, think creamy tzatziki, garlic yogurt dressing, or even a healthier swap for mayo in chicken salad. On the sweeter side, it makes an easy no-bake dessert when combined with fruit or used as a base for frozen yogurt.

For cooking, it holds up better than regular yogurt thanks to its lower moisture content. You can stir it into soups and stews at the end of cooking to add richness without curdling, or even use it in baking to give muffins, pancakes, and cakes a soft, moist crumb.

Greek yogurt also plays a role in gut health, thanks to its live and active cultures. While not all brands contain probiotics, many do, supporting digestive wellness and immune function.

From a practical standpoint, it’s a fridge essential. It has a longer shelf life than many dairy products, and its neutral base makes it easy to dress up or tone down, depending on the occasion. Whether you’re focused on nutrition, convenience, or flavor, Greek yogurt delivers on all fronts – a small container with big potential.

I don’t know why it took 6-8 hours. Mine was ready at 4! Still tasted good but not as thick as I hoped.

Sounds too easy, I doubt it’ll turn out right. I mean, can it really be that simple?

Not good. My mom always uses different cultures & it never comes out this runny. I’m sticking with store bought.

  12. 4 stars
This is basically just milk, right? Not sure why people pay for yogurt in the store anymore. LOL.

    1. 5 stars
True, it’s just milk! But making it at home is so much cheaper and tastier. 😂

Really? Just pouring yogurt into milk? I don’t believe it’s that easy. Must have some trick.

I tried it yesterday but it turned out soupy. 😞 What did I do wrong? Anyone know?

    1. User avatar Liet-Kynes says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t let it sit long enough? It needs time to thicken. Try again! 😊

    2. User avatar tristan.white says:

I’ve made this before, and it can get soupy if the milk wasn’t cooled enough before adding yogurt. Good luck next time!

This recipe is a lifesaver! I was buying so much yogurt, and now I make my own. Tastes amazing!

  16. 3 stars
I tried this once, but it didn’t turn out right. Is it supposed to be runny? I must have messed up the temps.

    1. 4 stars
Don’t worry, it happens! If it’s runny, maybe it didn’t sit long enough. Try leaving it for a bit longer next time.

    2. User avatar jamie.adams98 says:

I followed the instructions too, and mine was runny as well. I think the temp is super important. Maybe you should try a thermometer.

Yogurt making is a science. I think I put too much yogurt in. 😅

  18. User avatar irina.dubuque1973 says:

I don’t get how letting the yogurt sit at room temp can actually make it thick. Sounds a bit weird to me.

    1. User avatar latoya.bauch78 says:

      5 stars
It may sound weird, but that’s how the cultures work to thicken the yogurt. It’s all science! Trust me, it actually works! 😊

Idk, letting stuff sit out for hours sounds risky. What if it goes bad? I wouldn’t want to eat that.

Yummm! Had it with honey and berries. Will definitely make again! 😋
